Power Tools for Beginners

Since I’ve started sharing my projects, I’ve gotten a few questions about which power tools I recommend for beginners. Of course, DIY-ers need things like tape measures and levels, but knowing where to start with power tools can be overwhelming.

I did some research and found most lists like this have 7 or 8 tools. Power tools are expensive! I don’t know about you, but I could NOT swing 7 power tools in one purchase.

I thought back and realized, the 3 tools that I’ve used for EVERY project are our drill, our miter saw, and our brad nailer. We also recently got an orbital sander which has been a game changer (especially as someone who hates sanding), so I’m adding that to the list too, but honestly, I survived about a year without one.

  • Drill - An obvious must have. Used regularly on all types of projects - I even use ours for putting furniture together instead of those silly Allen keys.

  • Miter saw - Another necessity. lf you’re going to make the investment, I highly recommend getting a SLIDING saw.

  • Brad nailer - Great for finishing. We have a battery powered one, which has been nice because it avoids cords and air compressors.

  • Orbital sander - Sanding is so important for a quality end result. I’ve always sanded by hand up until recently, but for bigger projects, this is a must.

I’ve done most of our projects thus far with only the tools mentioned above, so if you’re new to DIY, that’s where I recommend starting. The more projects we take on, the more we’ve started growing our toolbox (I.e. reciprocating saw, circular saw, kreg jig).

Power tools are expensive but they are an investment. Plus, just think of all the money you’ll save doing these projects yourself!

Pay attention to what each comes with (I.e. a battery, a cord, accessories, etc.).

As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
